THE WILLIAM BUCHANAN FAMILY CEMETERY
RURAL RETREAT, VA.

The William Buchanan Family Cemetery is located approximately two and one half miles west of Rural Retreat, Virginia, on route #616, on the old Hankla Farm, known in the 1950's as the Clyde Robinson Farm.   As you cross the Summit (highest point on the Norfork-Southern Railroad) and get to the bottom of the hill, the Robinson Farm is on your left.    Drive another one quarter mile and you will go into a very sharp left turn - continue on for approximately one hundred yards and the road takes a very sharp right turn.    Before you take this right turn in the road, look to your left up on a hill and you will see the old cemetery surrounded by a wrought iron fence.

No one knows how old the cemetery is or the name of the first person who was laid to rest in the cemetery.    In my opinion and the opinion of many of my Elders who knew the Buchanans, and the history of the area, the cemetery was started by the original Robert(Tom) Buchanan, and his family.   My research into the old deeds appears to support the stories I have always heard.

Just a bit west of the cemetery and near the big spring is the present (1997) home of Ruby Overbay.    When I was a young boy, there was evidence of an old rock foundation near the Overbay home.    It is thought this was the location of the original Buchanan home, and that the cemetery is the oldest of the two Buchanan Cemeteries in the area.

The old cemetery (in 1997) is totally overgrown.   I fought my way through the thick underbrush in the 1960's and copied what stones I could find and read.    Following are the names I recorded.

Buchanan, Abraham 1822 1841
pro son of William & Katherine
Buchanan, E (unreadable)
pro dau of William & Katherine
Buchanan, John H. Jul 25 1850 Mar 29 1914
       son of Robert & Mary
Buchanan, Katharine age 42-4-22 Jun 12 1840

*Katharine was a daughter of John Peter and Mary (Staley) Kinder. She
      married William Buchanan, b. Dec. 12 1782.

*Mary was the wife of Robert Buchanan

Buchanan, Polly J. Jan 17 1855 Apr 03 1918
Buchanan, Robert May 24 1824 May 09 1864
     son of William & Katherine

*Robert was a member of the 45th VA. INF. He was killed in action at
Cloyd's Mountain. His brothers, Capt.'s John and Jim, and some
men returned after the war for Robert's body. They were dsiturbed
by the dirt falling back into the faces of their fallen comrades, and
Capt.'s John and Jim told the men to dig at the men's feet knowing
that Robert had some deformed toes. The next body they exhumed was their
brother, Robert. There is also a stone for Robert in the family square
at Mountain View Cemetery, in Rural Retreat, Virginia.

THE CALHOUN FAMILY CEMETERY, ATKINS, VA.

The old Calhoun Family Cemetery dates back to the original Calhoun Families who settled the area.   It has been neglected for many years.    When I copied the cemetery in the 1960's, the terrain was very wooded and covered also with underbrush.    There are many graves that had no stone in the 1960's.

The cemetery is located in Smyth County, Virginia, in the area known as Crow Hollow.   Driving west towards Atkins, Virginia, on US Highway # 11, turn right on what is today called Flowing Springs Road.   You will find this road just west of the I-81 overpass, and just east of the Merillat Cabinet Factory.

After turning onto Flowing Springs Road, cross over the river and take the right fork (Calhoun Hollow) in the road.    Continue on and take the first right.   This will be route #617.   As you turn right onto 617, the old Calhoun log home stood on the left of 617.    About a rock's throw from the old homesite and on the left of 617 - just off the road is the cemetery.

I estimate there are at least 20-30 graves in the cemetery.   Following are the only names I could record.

Calhoun, J. F. 1884 1935
Calhoun, J. T. 1853 1911
Calhoun, John C. Mar 14 1819 Jun 04 1892
Calhoun, R. M. 1850 1931
Calhoun, William A. Mar 16 1874 Aug 13 1926

Mathena, Nannie (wife of J.W.) Mar 29 1877 Jul 26 1898

Musser, George W. (23RD BN. VA. INF

*I have been told by the descendants of George Musser, that his wife,
Martha (Anderson) Musser is also buried in the cemetery. It appears
that some people are buried in the cemetery just because they lived
      in the neighborhood.

(Big) George Musser operated the old Thompson Atkins mill which stood
on the left and up on the hill just east of the I-81 overpass.

THE CRIGGER FAMILY (CARMI) CEMETERY, CAMP, VA.

The old Criggerr (Carmi) Family Cemetery is located in Smyth County, Camp, Virginia, on route # 612.   To get to the cemetery, drive south out of Wytheville, Virginia, on US 52/21 south to Speedwell, Virginia.    Turn right at Speedwell - drive about one mile - then turn left onto Dry Road, which is route # 612.    When you get to Camp, anyone in the area can direct you to the cemetery which is just past Camp, and up on a hill to the left.

The old cemetery takes it's name from the Carmi Church in Camp, but the cemetery dates back to Peter Crigger, to whom the land was granted, or perhaps before.

The cemetery today is very small and is not fenced.   The cattle have run through the grounds and some of the stones have been knocked over and/or destroyed.   If one looks at the terrain very closely, the remains of a fence are evident indicating the cemetery was once much much larger than today.   It is most probable that many of the early settlers of that area are resting in the cemetery.    It was in my opinion however, started by the Crigger family.

THE DAVIS CEMETERY, LOVER'S LANE; WYTHEVILLE, VA.

This Davis cemetery is located just a short distance east of Wytheville, Virginia, on route # 649 (Lover's Lane).  The cemetery is up on a hill on your left (going west) on route 649, just a short distance past the intersection of route # 720.   The old Davis home stood on past the cemetery on the left just before you enter a sharp right hand curve in 649.   My wife and I copied the cemetery as best we could in the fall of 1996 for a Kinder relative of mine from Arizona.  The cemetery is extremely overgrown, and cannot be seen from the road.

THE DAVIS CEMETERY, CRIPPLE CREEK, VA.
Compiled by: Doris Sheffey Collins

The Davis Cemetery is located on route # 646, in the community of Cripple Creek, in Wythe County, Virginia.  The cemetery was started about 1850 when a small child of a family going west on the old Wilderness Road died and Jacob Davis offered a spot on his land for burial. The mother of the child planted a pine tree near the grave which still stands guarding over the grave and the cemetery in it's majestic beauty. Thus the beginnings of the cemetery on land given by Jacob and Jane Davis, who have numerous descendents buried in the cemetery, and living in the neighborhood.  It has also become a neighborhood cemetery for people in the area.

THE FOGLESONG FAMILY CEMETERY, CRAWFISH VALLEY, RURAL RETREAT, VA.

The Foglesong Family Cemetery is located NW of Rural Retreat, Virginia, in Crawfish Valley.  Now a part of the National Forest, the cemetery is on the original land grant of Simon Foglesong, who settled the area about 1790.

The cemetery is located near the eastern end of Simon's 1000 acres grant, and just a short distance from the old homesite which no longer stands.   To get to the cemetery, drive up the valley to where the road is blocked by the National Forest. Here you will find a fairly large clearing.  From the clearing, walk south through some thick brush using an old path made by hunters - cross the creek - through a bit more brush and trees, and you will come into the clearing where the old Foglesong home stood.

The home place clearing is today being overgrown with thick sage brush and large white pines, but is one looks close you can see the remains of the two chimneys - one for the living quarters, and one for the kitchen which was a seperate building.  From here the cemetery is a bit SW, and somewhat hard to find as it is grown over in woodland, much like the rest of the forest.

In the past, the cemetery was cared for by Blaine and Henry Foglesong, and even had a fence surrounding the graves.  The fence is long gone, and trees have overtaken the cemetery grounds. Only three stones remain and they are almost unreadable.   The stone for Simon was destroyed over the years by stupid people calling themselves hunters and today a tree stands in the middle of Simon's grave.

Next to Simon, going left to right (south to north) is the grave of his wife, Susannah - then Margaret (Ewe) Foglesong, the wife of Simon's son, Charles - then Simon's son, Charles.  There are a few other graves in the cemetery, said to be children of a Waddle family, who lived in the area many years later.

Michael Foglesong, of Rural Retreat, Virginia, has permission from the Nation Forest to bridge the creek, and improve a path to the cemetery and the grounds of the cemetery.  When this is acomplished, the cemetery will be much easier to find and can be reached year round.

McRae, Daniel 1750 1869

*Daniel McRae married Valentine Fry's widow, Mary (Yonce) Fry after
Valentine died. The birth year above is clearly in error. According
to the 1860 census, he was born about 1775 :on the sea." Daniel was
my gg grand father through his daughter, Esther, who married James
      W. Cameron.

*Wanda Sue stated that after Daniel died, Mary (Yonce) Fry McRae went
to live with a Murry (perhaps related) family in Tazewell County,
Virginia, and died there. Wanda Sue states Mary is not buried in
      the Fry Cemetery.

*Wanda Sue also stated that a Lloyd Fry, from somewhere in Kansas,
came to Cripple Creek in the 1960's and had the stones for Valentine
and Daniel's graves made and placed in the cemetery. I have Lloyd
to thank because before that, I did not know where my gg grand
      father, McRae was buried.

THE STEPHEN GOSE FAMILY CEMETERY, BLAND COUNTY, VA.

The Stephen Gose family cemetery is located in Bland County, Virginia, north of Bastian and near the community of Grapefield.   From US Highway # 52, turn west on route # 614 and drive approximately 5 miles and the little cemetery is on the left of the road.

The cemetery is about 100 feet from the road and up on a very small long knoll.   The cemetery is in very bad condition and NO stones can be read at this time.   There are a few stones still present in the cemetery and I plan to try to clear the brush so I can possible read the inscriptions.

The following records are mostly from a family history written by Mathias Ambrose Fox about 1900, with a few dates taken from, "Pioneers of The Virginia Bluegrass," by George B. Gose.   It appears they may be from 20 to 25 graves in the cemetery.

Cameron, Levi Newton Jun 09 1850 Apr 16 1854

*******Levi was a son of Jacob and Margaret (Fox) Cameron

Gose, Aaron G. s of Stpehen Jan 21 1826 Jan 21 1826

*******This child may have died before the family moved to the
Gose farm on Wolf Creek and therefore not in this cemetery.

Gose, Archibald T. s of Stephen Jun 03 1829 Dec 26 1832

*******The above record is from, "Pioneers of The Virginia
Bluegrass," by George B. Gose. According to a history that
was written by Mathias A. Fox, Archibald was grown with a family.

Gose, Elizabeth w of Stephen Jan 01 1803 Mar 10 1872

*******Elizabeth was a daughter of Mathias and Barbara (Spangler)
       Fox, of Burke's Garden, Virginia.

THE VALENTINE HART CEMETERY, WYTHE COUNTY, VA.

The data for the following two graves were given to me by Earl Brook, and I wish to thank Earl for sharing this information.    Earl, while hiking in Wythe County, came upon these two graves - the stones laying on the ground and covered with leaves, etc.    According to Earl, the graves were near the remains of a foundation, most likely a house, near the foot of the mountain.    The location of these graves is northeast of Wytheville, on the Dr. Zigler land and off the Stringtown Road.

THE JOSEPH HICKS CEMETERY, BASTIAN, VA.

The Hicks Cemetery is located near Bastian, Virginia, on US # 52.  The directions to the cemetery is as follows:  get off I77 at the Bastian exit - turn left and go to the stop sign - turn left on 52 south - go about one half mile until you come to a sharp left turn in 52 - there is a wide spot there to the right where you can park.  From here, you will have to walk about 100 yards on south on 52, and up to the right on a steep bank you will find the cemetery.

The cemetery dates back to at least January, 1862, when Elizabeth, wife of Peter Hicks died.  If I am correct in assuming Duncan Cameron's mother is buried here, than the cemetery dates back to at least April, 1855.  Up on the ridge behind the cemetery is an old (no longer traveled) road, and it is evident that this old road was used to gain access to the cemetery.  I thought it may have been the old #52 however, according to Mr. Pruitt, who lives nearby, the old road was an old Dinky Road used years ago to haul trees out of the mountain to the saw mill and Mr. Walker, who now owns the land made the access road into the cemetery.

There are perhaps 10 to 20 more graves in the cemetery with no markers, unreadable markers, or just stones marking the graves.  Below are the stones that Connie and I could read.

Cameron, Duncan hus of Margaret Sep 05 1791 Dec 18 1886
Cameron, Margaret wife of Duncan Dec 08 1892

******* Margaret Cameron was a Fox, the second wife of Duncan Cameron.

Although no marker was found, I am sure Duncan's mother is
buried in this cemetery. After Her husband, James Cameron,
died in 1838, in Floyd Co., KY., Charity Ann (Spangler)
Cameron returned to lived with her son, Duncan.

THE PETER KEESLING CEMETERY, SMYTH COUNTY, VA.

COPIED SEPT., 1980 By Michael Keesling, of Culpeper, Virginia.   The old Keesling Cemetery is located on the old Peter Keesling farm in Smyth County, Virginia near the town of Cedar Springs.   The farm is owned today (1998) by the Terry family.

The cemetery is located on route # 749 about one half mile west of Cedar Springs, and just off route # 90.   The actual location is just off the fire road that runs between the main house and dairy barn.   The names and dates are as written on the stones.    Some of the stones have been moved to the Asbury Methodist Church Cemetery, near Cedar Springs, and I will so indicate with an "*".    The information within brackets are added personal comments of Michael Keesling.

THE LEVITT FAMILY CEMETERY, BLAND COUNTY, VA.

The Levitt Family Cemetery is located in Bland County, Virginia, on route # 614.  Get off I-77 at the Bastian, Virginia, exit - turn left and go to the stop sign which is US Highway #52.  Turn left onto #52 - drive about one quarter of a mile, and turn right onto route #614.  After driving about 8.8 miles on route # 614, you will see an old dirt trail on your right leading up a steep ridge into the woods.  This old dirt trail is just a bit east of the Grapefield Church of God.

There is room off to the side of route # 614 at the old dirt trail to park your car.  Walk up the old trail about 280 yards where you will come to a 4-way in the old trail.  Take the left trail and follow it about 100 yards where you will find the cemetery.

The cemetery is well maintained and fenced.  There are quite a few concrete blocks marked only with the name "Levitt" and "Kidd" and several un-marked graves.

THE HENRY J. LOONEY FAMILY CEMETERY, BLAND COUNTY, VA.

The Henry J. Looney Family Cemetery is located in Bland County, Virginia, on route #614.  Get off I-77 at the Bastian, Virginia, exit - turn left and go to the stop sign which is US Highway #52.  Turn left onto #52 - drive about one quarter of a mile, and turn right onto route #614.  After driving 5.6 miles on #614, you will see the pond at the Wolf Creek Golf Course on your left.  Across the road from the pond you will see an "A" frame home with an old road on the west side leading up the mountain.  Walk about 490 yards (I take big steps) up the old road and the cemetery is to your left up on a small ridge.  The little hollow between the old road and the cemetery can be swampy at times therefore, it is best to walk about 100 more yards up the old road to an old logging clearing (an old homesite is there) where you will find another old logging road behind the old homesite leading to the south west.  This old logging road will take you to the cemetery which is about 100 yards down the small hollow and up the ridge slightly.  The cemetery will be on your left just off the old logging road.

The cemetery is located in a heavily wooded area so look for a large patch of Yucca plants.

THE SCOTT (SNAVELY) CEMETERY, ATKINS, VA.

The accepted name for the cemetery today (1998) is, the "Scott Cemetery." Depending on who you talk with however, you may hear it called, "Calhoun Cemetery," or "Crow Cemetery."    The name, "Scott Cemetery" is mis-leading because the name comes from Pepper Scott, who owned the land around 1900, and afterwards, and is buried in the cemetery.

The history of the area has been lost in time, and only a very few people living today know the real story of the area.    The cemetery dates back to at least 1825, and should really be referred to as, "The Snavely Cemetery."    We feel quite certain that the first person to be buried in the cemetery was John Adam Snavely, in 1825, or Elizabeth (Musser) Snavely, John Adam's mother, sometime before February 23, 1826, or perhaps Thomas Crow, Sr., in 1811. We are continuing to research the area's history, and hopefully someday have documented evidence to substantiate these facts.

The Scott Cemetery is located on route # 684, just a bit west of the Atkins Brick Plant, on US Highway # 11.   Going west on US #11 from Groseclose, Virginia, you will cross over the railroad tracks at the brick plant.    Continue on west past the Waddell Trucking Company about two tenths of a mile, and turn right on route # 684.    Route # 684 is an unpaved, narrow road.    After crossing the railroad and the Middle Fork of the Holston River, continue on until you come to the fense at the Interstate 81 right of way.

At the I-81 right of way fense, there is an old road that turns to the left and runs parallel with I-81.    This old road is now more or less a path through a field, but a high clearance vehicle can be driven on the old road.   The old cemetery is on the left of the old road and about half way up on the ridge.

The cemetery is in terrible condition, having been over grown for over 40 years at least, and having gone through two terrible ice storms a few years back which fell trees in a twisted and tangled mess.   My brother and I talked with the present land owner, and at that time the land owner agreed to help us using his farm equipment clean the cemetery.   When we talked to the land owner the second time, he had changed his mind saying that he really wanted to clean the cemetery, but some of the people living close by raised so much hell he decided not to cause problems in the neighborhood.

How very sad!!!!   In my opinion, the so-called neighbors who raised all the hell are very ignorant and care nothing for the history of the area and their heritage - some of their ancestors are resting in the cemetery.

Following are the stones that I found in the cemetery in the late 1950's, and where noted, I have included names of people whom I know are buried in the cemetery but have no marker.   This knowledge comes from the families of my first wife, the Crows and Calhouns, and also from Merle Crowe, of Rochester, MN, who has compiled his research on the Crows and related families.   I have also included two names from the "Smyth County, Virginia Cemeteries", by Mack and Ken Sturgill.

*****NOTE: There are NO STONES for any of the Snavely family that
follows. From our research, and an old letter written by
Katie Steffey Snavely, we know the following Snavely data is
     mostly correct.

*****NOTE: Elizabeth was a daughter of Black Lick John and Elizabeth

Snavely, George s.of John, Jr. Mar 2 1791 May 15 1864

George died owning the cemetery land. We are certain that
George, his wife, Sussanah, and perhaps many of his family are
      buried in the cemetery.

                          Brandstetter Snavely

*****NOTE: We know that by 1792, John owned and was living on this
land and we have reasons to believe that John, and his
father, OLD John, were living on the land prior to 1790. If this
is corect, than OLD John, who died in 1789/1790 is also buried in
     the cemetery.

*****NOTE: Phillip had a twin that was either born dead, or died very
soon after birth, and is most likely buried somewhere in
the cemetery. In later years, Phillip's wife, Nancy, had Phillip
moved to the cemetery at Pleasant Hill Church, in Groseclose,
Virginia, where Nancy was later buried.

THE MARTIN STALEY FAMILY CEMETERY, RURAL RETREAT, VA.

The Staley Family Cemetery is located on the north side of US Highway #11, about 1.5 miles west of Staley's Crossroads, near Rural Retreat, Virginia.   The field where the cemetery is located adjoins and is east of the Sunset Memory Gardens.

The cemetery was started as the family cemetery of Martin Staley, one of the two progenitors of the Staleys in Wythe County today.   The old folks always called it an Akers Family Cemetery.    Not until I researched the old deeds was I positive that Martin Staley was buried here.    An old deed where Capt. John Staley, Martin's son, was settling his father's estate verified my convictions.    In the old deed, Capt. John Staley sold this piece of ground, but reserved the 30 X 30 foot cemetery for himself and his heirs because it was the grave of his father.

No one knows the names of all who are buried here.    Only four stones are readable and they are Aker stones.    At least one of Capt. John's daughters married an Aker (Benjamin), and at one time, Ben owned this land.    Francis P. Staley also married an Aker.

Besides the four marked stones, there are also three huge rocks that mark graves.    These huge rocks, in my opinion, mark the graves of Martin and his first wife, Christian Staley, a son of Martin, who was murdered near Staunton, Virginia, in 1796, and the first wife of Abraham Staley, a son of Martin.

The old cemetery was completely over grown and in 1996, my brother and I cleared off all the trees and under brush and were removing all the stumps.    Because the present land owner runs stock in the field, the cemetery needed fencing, but I received no help from any Staley descendants, and the land owner did not offer to supply the necessary materials for the fence.    The cemetery is now over grown again.

Following are the names on the four readable stones and my opinion as to who the people were.

Aker, Elizabeth W. Jan 25 1812 Jun 19 1836

Aker, Mary W. 1831 Jan 1835
Aker, Nancy J. Aug 05 1838 Jun 10 1839
Aker, Sarah E. May 11 1811 Apr 01 1842

Dau. of Capt. John Staley

THE FRANCIS STEFFEY FAMILY CEMETERY, GROSECLOSE, VA.

The Steffey Family Cemetery is located one mile south of Groseclose, Virginia, at the intersection of routes #615, #616, and #679.    It is up on a hill in the SW corner of this intersection.   It has recently been cleared by the present land owner but is again growing over with tall weeds.

Although called the Steffey Cemetery, and being on old Steffey land, I believe the cemetery was a community cemetery because of the many different names that are known to be in the cemetery.

*On his stone are the letters "B of I" and "F & E"
John was a huge man according to local stories. A special coffin
had to be built for him, and when they went to carry him from
the house, the coffin would not go out the door. A window was
removed from the house and his body was carried out the vacant
      window.
The old Steffey house stood in the front yard of the present
(1997) Gordon home, just off road in the intersection of route
      # 616 and #679.

Acording to Mary Bergin, granddaughter of Grady Yonts, my original
info on the Yonts home was told to me in error.
Following is a copy of her email to me about the Yonts home.

The house was built in 1949; my dad was 17 years old at the time.
Grady Yonts had purchased the land from the Steffey family. There was
an old "log" home on the land that was torn down. Salvaged from the
"log" home was the stained glass. This stained glass was placed in the
new front door of the Yonts family home. The front door contains 3
panels of stained glass.

As for the remainder of the home, all of the timber to build the home
came from the farm. Johnny Pickle and Perry Atwell built the home
"stick by stick" except for the front door. Johnny and Perry were
cousins of Grady. All the floors in the home were wood floors. The
floor boards were sent to North Carolina to be kiln dried and returned
to be laid for the flooring in the Yonts home. The only thing that
came off the railroad in Groseclose was the dried wood flooring for the
floors.

Another interesting tidbit was regarding the cement basement. The
walls were poured a minimum of 12" thick. Iron rods and old stantions
from the barn were placed in the cement walls for reinforcement
partially because of the close location of the water springs). It was
thought that nothing would every move the foundation of the house.
When blastings in the area for the New River power lines were
performed, the blasting caused one of the basement walls to have a
slight crack in it. As a young child I remember some of the neighbors
still talking about how surprised they were that such a crack could
develop in such a thick basement.

There was also a grove of Cedar trees that were cleared to build the
house. The cedar was sent to North Carolina to be dried; and a cedar
chest and cedar wardrobes were made from the boards as well as other
cedar items for the home. I have one of the cedar chests in my home.

William "Grady" Yonts was the postmaster in Groseclose since the
1930's. In 1936 he was injured in a farm accident and lost his leg.
He was then unable to continue to farm and became the postmaster. He
also owned the general store in Groceclose which he ran until his
death.

Steffey, William F. Jan 27 1861 Dec 27 1910

*On his stone are the letters "B of L & E" - There is also an
engine and coal car carved on his stone.

***** There are perhaps 20-30 graves with no markers. I do know that
Robert and Martha (Pickle) Kegley are buried in this cemetery.
They were the parents of Adam Rittenhouse Kegley, a neighbor of
      mine in my boyhood.
